In the past I have manually copied the files from the "Installation disk" to a suitable directory on the hard drive. You will need to enter a line in your autoexec.bat eg. SET DENAME = 123456. You should find this file in the Windows/SYSTEM32 dirctory I have it working with Windows XP and Windows 7
Hope the above works for you

DataEase Product SupportHistoric Product Support InformationWe are currently running v5.15 and I'm trying to find out what level of support DataEase provide for this version, but so far they have not answered any emails. ODBC connection to MS SQLDEFINITIVE guidance neededHi, Where can I find DEFINITIVE instructions on how to connect to MS SQL via ODBC. I have spent some hours trying to do this without success, and keep getting confronted with messages like "Invalid object name 'Standard Times.st.Tasks'". By contrast I tried to connect using the Open Office database and was connected in 5 minutes - there's a lesson here somewhere. Please don't suggest that I should use OLEDB since I have done this, and although I was able to connect the data is corrupted. This must be a very common requirement and yet this feature of DE is poorly documented and implemented.

List records from one form and then enter them into another formHi, I use the below procedure to list records in a specific order from one form and then enter those records into another form in the same order. When the records list on the screen they stop at each page, and then the user must hit page down key for the next page to list, etc. Once the list finishes the user must hit the esc key so the records are entered into the other form. Can this be done another way so it is completely automated and the user does not have to do anything? Thanks, Mike for Race Numbers Final Numbers By: Michael M. Print multiple copies COLLATED = crash every timeIf I print multiple copies (in my tests I've selected 2) DataEase crashes if I have the collate box ticked. This happens in many different databases, in many different DQL's, to different printers (including a print to PDF printer). Unticking collate stops the crash but I need these things collated, the alterative of running a DQL multiple times to get multiple copies or photocopying isn't good. This problem used to happen in Datease 5.5, 6.0 or 6.1, can't remember which now. By: Simon Brown posted: 16th February 2010 - 13:05 Comment this |

DE 7.2 Extremely slowDE 6.52 Application migrated to DE 7.2
Apart fro a few minor errors and warnings all went fine - considering it is an app with 900 tables, over 4000 forms and 6000 DQL's. Unfortunately the general app speed is EXTREMELY slow with DE 7.2 compared to DE6.52.
Even a standard Record Status run takes > 10 minutes to complete. In DE 6.52 this takes under a minute.

Hi Stewart. There is no reason why 7.2 should be any slower than 6.52, but we have had some problem with migrated applications both from 6.52 and from 7.0. The problem is normally that the application object and status tables has grown to abnormal sizes. If you could zip up the application and send it to us, we would have a look at it and see if we can identify the problem. Send it to ulrik@dataease.com.

Hi Tony, As you may know, Pete Tabord’s wife Trina passed away last year. As you may also know, they were partners in Database City, with Pete in charge of developing Ffenics, and Trina responsible for support, sales, customer service, etc. Database Software Ltd is a company put together by a group of interested parties, including myself, to help support Pete’s ongoing commitment to creating a first-class database solution for small businesses and their data needs. He continues to be focused on developing the product; I am concentrating on marketing and customer service. In addition, I have been providing customer support since shortly after Trina’s funeral. Due to mundane things like sorting out a new address and phone system to deal with the fact that this company is now virtual (Pete is in Wales, I’m in Cornwall, and we have people in other places offering sales support, etc), we are only this week in a position to start to make announcements, as well as changes to the details on the website. Rest assured that Ffenics is moving forward very much as before, except now with myself involved. There has been a hiatus while Pete has dealt with personal matters, but now Ffenics is properly back on track. Hope this clarifies things. I’ll be making more announcements over the next week. ValueLoaded is an event that is called repeatedly on refreshing of the form etc, so not a good event for OML. I put in this script simply to get it to stop. define "C" text 1 .

So when a user save a new invoice, a dql procedure must read the last number from the table NR-INVOICE, add 1 to this number and save the invoice with this number. We have also tryed to look exclusive the NR_INVOICE table but nothing happens, only the first user can get the invoice number . Thanks!

Hi Einar! There is two ways you can access an Access database from DFW. ODBC and OleDB. The first one is very straight forward, you only need to create an ODBC access object. You will find the ODBC Administrator in the control panel, under Administrative tools. When you have created the ODBC link, you open DFW and click on DB links. You can use any name as the Link Name, Engine Type is Other Engines via ODBC, Server Name is the Data Source Name from the ODBC Administrator, and the Database name can be anything. Click Add, and all the available tables will show up in the Tables Available box. Select the tables you want to use and click build forms.

form in use - why?I'm tidying up some routines in a datease 6.52 application after migration and have come across a problem with a few DQL's regarding file in use. I've stripped out everything and made a basic demonstrate of the problem: -- DQL start for FORMA ; -- DQL end The issue is caused by the second FOR routine. I get a time out telling me FORMA is in use. It shouldn't be as I closed FORMA with END before starting the next FOR loop. This issue I've already come across in 2 DQL's to now, both of which worked fine in 6.52 but in 7.2.2.747 the second FOR loop can not run as Datease hasnt closed FORMA from the first FOR loop. Is there a simple fix to this or has something changed? Thanks. By: Simon Brown posted: 19th January 2010 - 13:21 Comment this |

Hi Simon, Try wrapping the entire procedure in an outer for loop. You'll need to pick just one record for this, but you don't need a dedicated table as such. This: for AnyOLdTable ; Also, your syntax on the modify looks odd. Surely you should have: for FORMB with Picking Week between 01/12/09 to 31/12/09 ; See if that makes any difference. <a href="http://www.n10net.com">Adrian</a> Comment by: Adrian Jones at 20th January 2010 - 18:38 |

Sorry Adrian I wrote it wrong to the screen, the procedure should read -- DQL start
As you can see I have included an outer loop (I have a 1 record form for that purpose that I use elswhere! :) ) But even with the outer loop the same problem arises. As an after thought I replaced FORMB with another form and the routine didn't lock, but with another form it still it does. So I'm now starting to think this has something to do with how my relationships are set up. Some have a unique relationship name, but old ones don't have a relationship name; again coming from my early days when I didn't understand it's purpose, and to be honest I still don't but I tend to enter something in there and use it. Any thoughts Adrian? Comment by: Simon Brown at 21st January 2010 - 13:41 |

Hi Adrian thanks for getting back to me. In the meantime I've been deleting all none essential data and DQL's and fields and relationships to get a simple set of test data. So I ruled out relationship problems, large tables, clustered data etc. I've just found something after having a bare database with 3 tables, 2 relationships and a few records. The problem stems around INDEXing. If I go in to FORMA and untick INDEXED the routine works sweet as a nut. For reference it is this indexed field that forms the relationship with FORMB. So now it's a case of either indexes don't work properly or you can't have relationships with indexed fields. Not sure what yet. Comment by: Simon Brown at 21st January 2010 - 17:17 |

OK after having a play i've found the culprit I think, but unsure what is happening. It is ultimately to do with file locking. In preferences under APP DATA ADMIN, PRINT LOCKING, if I change Data: Lock Files to Lock Records it works. Change it back and it doesn't work again. So whilst Data: lock files doesn't work, if the box below; Files is changed from files to records it now works this way too, but locking FILES doesn't. So ultimately file locking mucks up everything, answer is to lock records. Dataease has always made a mess of locking, looks like the mess is now taking a different path! Any further thoughts?

Home Coming to DataEaseWhy am I returning to DataEase? at £99.00 the product is a no brainer, however at £299 per seat vs MS-Access it is too expensive for product development and to roll-out over a large number of seats.I have been tempted back to DataEase purely on the Amnesty offering of £99.00. Just hope I am not disappointed. I am a mature IT person who started out as a Cobol/Fortran programmer and fell in love with a product called DataMaster aka DataEase in the early 80's. Built many applications but when the consultants arrived and recommedned Microsoft Office in the organisation it killed off DataEase and it was replaced with Access which was an inferior product but it came free as part of the MS takeover. Over the past 25 years I morphred from a programmer to systems analyst and then jumped the net into Sales / Marketing and commercial management in an International corporation before finally being dumped back into IT as data migration manager for a large SAP and Seibel project. Got out on an early exit plan and started up my own import business but still love IT after 35+years. I abandoned DataEase with the release of 5.5 as I felt there was an anti-MS tone and a lack of simple integration with MS based products primiraly Excel and windows which severly limited the product. While most other software suppliers offered a bridge to import data dircetly from MS-Excel, DataEAse lost the plot by making integration with MS products akward and fell behind badly in this regard, ignoring the move of the major corporates to MS based platforms. Why am I returning to DataEase? at £99.00 the product is a no brainer, however at £299 per seat vs MS-Access it is too expensive for product development and to roll-out over a large number of seats. Hope to rekindle my development skills with DataEase and hope not to be disappointed. Wishing the team every succes in 2010. By: John De Courcy posted: 11th January 2010 - 01:56 Comment this |

Hi Fred, One of the additional programs of DE7 is the migrate program. It's installed together with the rest. You can see it when you go to the program map where DataEase is installed ( Start-> Program's-> DataEase 7.2 -> Migrate ). Follow the instructions which the program asks for. It will migrate your application to a DE7 application. Al the errors it runs in are also listed and are logged in a log-file in the map you created the new application in. DataEase 6.52I do not trust DataEase upgrades. Are copies of 6.52 still available.Having live through the whole grisly past from DataEase for DOS up to the present date, I am extremely wary of new DataEase versions. Some of these have been catastrophic, and I have no wish to do this again.
However, I could use some licences for 6.52, are these still available. By: Andrew Pickles posted: 8th December 2009 - 19:19 Comment this |

Hi Andrew. You are completely entitled to be sceptical about the DFW range. There is a lot to be ashamed of there. As you might already know, it is a completely new team that is running DataEase now, and I can assure you that we are aware of the problems and shortcommings in the past. DataEase 7.2 is basically only what you have been asking for, a serious bug fix on 7.1 with more than 2000 fixes and changes. Our main goal though is not to attain status quo, but again make this product a great application tool. This will of course not happen over night. But it is of course a worry for us that some of our customers don't think this is possible. We have a clear plan, and we did not join DataEase to keep doing the same as this company has been doing for the last 15 years, mending DFW. The question you should of course ask yourself is, if you have so little trust in the abillity of this company, should you be using this tool at all?

Entered & Modified datesDerivation formula for datesI am busy redeveloping our large DataEase Dos data base to 7.2 and have a problem with the derivation the formula for dates. In DOS I used the Current Date command to record a date on which the record was modified and ??/??/?? command to enter the date on which the record was first entered. This date never changed but the modified date should and did. When I use the ??/??/?? command in the derivation field of the Field Defination input form as a date field it returns a ??/??/00 in the document view. Am I doing something wrong or is there a way to fix this? Wim By: Wim von der Becke posted: 7th December 2009 - 09:19 Comment this |

How to use Keyboard function keys in user modeDoes anyone know how to use the keyboard function keys to do such things as save record(F2) or look at next record (F3). My function keys does not work at all when I open a form. The only way I can look at records is using icons on the tool bar. Also what would usefull thing to have would be to be able to come out of a form by simply pressing an Esc key as was possible back in the good old days of DOS. Hi Mukund. The function keys should work fine in 7.2, but as function keys are a little outdated a lot of PCs let the function keys double with other functionality as well. On my laptop I need to hit a special button to enable them as Function Keys. The problem with trying to "re-create" a DOS product in Windows is that it is a different environment. In DOS you could only have one object open at the same time. In Windows you are in a multitasking environment, where you can have several things going at the same time. Instead of opening and closing, you swap between them.

dease 7.0 and Win 7Cannot seem to load Dease 7.0, 7.1 or 7.2 on my new Windows 7 machineWhen I tried to set up 7.0, I can only go as far as entering my serial #. At that point, it returns stating I have an invalid #.
When I tried to load 7.2 with my new serial #, all I get is the option to cancel or go back. "Next" is not an option.
Can someone please explain what is wrong. According to Data Ease both programs should be compatible with Windows 7.
My XP machine just bit the dust so, I'm between a rock and a hard place.

This problem is due to you copying and pasting the serial. It is very easy to get an extra blank either in front or after the serial, and it will then not work.

DataEase Dos PatchesLink for DataEase Dos Patches Doesnt workHi, Please can you look into the link problem on your downloads page for the DataEase Dos Patches. I'm using 5.16 and was looking at patching to 5.53. Could you make the 5.0 - 5.53 patches available again on your downloads page. The link points to www71.dataease.com Thanks. Lee Oatway

Hi Lee. Yes, that link is broken. The Legacy stuff is still the responsibillity of The Sapphire Group, DataEase is only responsible for 7.2 and onwards. I have fixed the link so it will no go to the new DataEase Services page from Sapphire. That solved problem one... The problem is that the patch you are looking for is not available online for some reason....I guess it is a money issue. Contact Sapphire directly via the www.dataeaseservices.com site or www.sapphiregroup.com

Interested in New VersionI am interested in the newest version of DataEase for developing web-based applications. I have developed several web sites in .asp but it is very time consuming. If DataEase offers its original simplicity of developing forms and reports around an SQL compliant database then I look forward to returning to the fold.I have been a Microsoft Access developer since 1995. Prior to that I used DataEase extensively starting with Version 1.0 until switching to MS Access. I switched because my company became a Windows based company when MS introduced Windows in the early 1980s. I really enjoyed DataEase as I found it easy to develop applications. Thomas, I'm in a similar situation to you but I'm a logistics guy, dealing with Shipping, Trucking and Warehousing. Agree with your comments regarding how easy Dataease is to use, but in terms of the Web Based version, for the moment i'd give it a very wide berth.
I purchased the multi-user version when i pought version 7.1, upgraded and for one reason or another i cannot get the web version to work with the 7.2 upgrade.
I've emailed Dataease twice, once answered with a yes i've tested it and it works (when in fact it clearely doesn't) the other time I posted on the bugs aspect and have yet to receive a response. I may have paid £700 for the web based version but the amount of money i've spent on up grading the hardware to make sure it functions is eye watering, only to find that it simply doesn't work.
If they get it working then i'm sure it will be a coll product but for the minute, i'd hold on and ask for a refund if they can't ensure it functions correctly. Comment by: Joe Bennett at 18th November 2009 - 20:07 |

There has not been a web based version for DataEase since 7.1 as we abandoned WebPublisher with that product. WebPublisher is not the way to the web for DataEase, and we are sorry that Joe have found this out the hard way. DataEase is undergoing a big turnaround and it is all about the web. WebPublisher is a very limited, and very rigrourous and difficult product. The goal for DataEase on the Web is of course to do be easy. We are sorry that people feel let down by us, but we have to make some hard decissions to get this product back on track. We will give WebPublisher a shot to see if we can make it work with 7.2 as promised Joe, but it will never be a brilliant product.

Sorry for any inconvenience this mixup has caused.

Hello Maurizio, No setting up was needed in my case other than assigning printers. This is a bit guessing and trying because the printers are given names in VP/XPmode which have no reference to to the actual printers. A bit troublesome, but when you have got it right, it works fine - even the "net use" LP1-3 setup for 4.53. VP/XPmode works very fast and is not inferior to running on an XP machine. Typing Decimal SeparatorHi, we have tested the beta DataEaseRC - 7.2.2.712 and the Decimal Separator bug now is Ok, Now remained only a problem: here in italy all the applications give the possibility to enter "numeric" datas using the character "." to specify decimal separator (instead of comma). So it would be very useful (for all italian application users) if it could enter numbers with decimals using dot. (instead of ","). Now if we want to enter the number: 10,36 we are forced to enter: 10 + comma + 36 Thanks!

Decimals in DataEase has always been a nightmare, and we have to admit that we messed up really bad as Maurizio have pointed out with the fix that was supposed to improve this. Since both the setting in DataEase and in Windows affect this, it was not spotted by our QA as they only tested English English and EURO EURO, and then it worked perfectly. The problem only came to day if you tried to use ex. DE setting for , and English WIndows or Vice Verca. This fix have now been rolled back and from 7.2.2 this will work as intended. THis is how it should and will work: Since code from legacy DataEase will have , (comma) as decimal sperator we have a switch in the migration too, and a setting in RDRRxAAA.INI (Applications setting file in application catalog) where one can chose a different decimal seperator for the application. This will prevail for all programming in that application. The decimal seperator selected for the application will not affect what is displayed in the application during RT which will be whatever setting the user have set in Windows.

Hi Maurizio. OLEDB will not be a part of DataEase in the future as the product will be completely redesigned and data access will be provided in a different manner. OLEDB was removed early on in the 7.2 project due to the libraries etc used was not compatible with the latest compilers, but we have since decided to include it again for the duration of 7.2. We are actually completing fixing OLEDB in 7.2 as we speak, and it will be fixed in release 7.2.2

Problem opening fresh installGetting a "user directory open error"I have been running my tool and die business on Dataease 4.5 since the early 80's. I would be running the latest version except that converting from 4.5 to a newer would have required an extensive rewrite. The application has grown in size with our company all these years and we have been happy with it's performance on many windows platforms. The original floppies stopped working a few years ago and we have to change the time in the machine it runs in whenever we hit daylight savings time but it keeps on ticking. My office machine crashed a month ago and I got stuck with a Vista machine and when I tried to put it on this machine to use for lookups it wouldn't get past the log on screen. It keeps giving me a "user directory open error". I don't know if this is something with Vista or just something I am missing. Anybody run into this before? Automated Reports via emailAre we able to execute an automated email report each time we enter or execute a 'specified' transaction.I'm designing and building a DB which currently does most of the hard work within the system. At the minute, if i want to email, i have to prnt to PDF and save to c drive and email or another derivative. I'm thinking about constructing a table within the DB, with email client details, email addresses and date and time fields, or fileds that say: every "Friday" or every "31st" or month "end" then send a report named "name of report". This will then send a report for the client of their stock holding or what ever report i wish to send them. I would also build into the table the ability to to state each time a specific transaction takes place, ie. Record Save in a Table or each time a DQL, named "whatever" is run that it would also send an email in PDF or another applicable format to the client for whom we've just processed at transaction. I've no problem constructing the tables and putting the processes together - i theory, what i cant get my head around is how to have a thread open all of the time within the DB to watch what transaction takes place - anyone know? In my mind i'm thinking that some form of script within each dql or transaction would have to be written to state "if xyz, then execute "EMAIL DQL" or what ever i call it.. Can anyone offer advice or pointers on this?

Disappearing fields and boxes in when printing to screen or printer in wysiwygWhen printing invoices, invoice one displays/print OK, subsequent invoices are missing fields and boxes.I have written a procedure to produce automated invoices. The body of the procedure is to be printed WYSIWYG, The edited display has gone in Ok (How DO you 'bring to front' or 'put behind' !!) and the procedure executes fine except when printing beyond invoice number one. Some of the drawn rectangles and some of the text fields are lost. The missing items are always the same ones. I have tried deleting the offending items, saving the procedure and then reconstructing the boxes and texts. It made no difference. It doesn't make any difference if the invoices are printed to screen or printer. I have tried running the procedure on different PCs (in case it was a memory shortage) with exactly the same result. If the procedure is written to screen and the 'page up' or 'page down' keys are pressed I receive the mesage 'Low heap' and procedure exits to the script page.

Hi Neil I am experience missing field problems, and missing lines of text, when printing to screen or printer. Have you solved the problem, if so can you let me know what causes it in the first place, and how to cure it. I find the problem quite frustrating, when it should be a simple task creating such reports! I look forward to your kind reply, with interest. KML

Help with e-mail fieldHow do I create a field for sendig out e-mails?Could anyone kindly assist me? I want to create a field which will contain email addresses that I can "click on", and e-mail details contained in another field (or fields), to customers. I know that this can be achieved in other versions, but I have just upgraded to 7.2 and as an "amature", can't get my head round this problem. I must say, that it would be great if the bods at Dataease could actually include in future versions field types for e-mail, and phone numbers eabling the user to be able to make calls, and send out emails without having to work out a formula, or trouble forum members. Any help would be greatfully, very greatfully, received! Keith

Hi Keith, this is the bods at DataEase. Thanks for giving us a good laugh :-) To be honest you ask the right questions, and a lot of stuff should have been standard in DataEase a long time ago. One can only wonder where the resistance has been, but it is atleast gone. All of the things you mention will be standard in the next version of DataEase as well as a lot more, but for now you have to use the CDF functionality. If you look in the CDFSLIB application that is shipped with the latest versions of 7.2 you will see an example that do exactly what you want. All the best, The Bods at DataEase. DataEase 7.2 Default Fonts and ToolbarsHi, I just moved from DataEase 7.1 to DataEase 7.2. In designer view of version 7.1 the default text font was arial bold 9 pt, and you could put the object palette and designer toolbar in different locations, and they would remain in those locations even after you exited the database. In version 7.2 the default font is trebuchet ms regular 11 pt, and the object palette and designer toolbar do not remain in the locations after you exit the database. Is there any way to change the default font, and can the toolbars default locations be changed? Thanks, Mike; By: Michael M. Dorn posted: 13th August 2009 - 17:49 Comment this |

The defulat style before 7.2 was <none>, that means that no style was used, but the default of each object was used. For a lot of objects was Arial Bold 9 the defualt, but it was not consistent. In 7.2 we have changed the default style to Default, and it is a normal DataEase style that can be changed. If you want to have Arial Bold 9 as default, the only ting you need to do is to create or change the style on an application, and when you are happy with your own style, you copy it over the DEFAULT.STY in the styles catalog under the DataEase program catalog. Remember to keep a copy as it will be overwritten when you update your DataEase.

Thank you Ulrik for your reply, but how do I do it, and where is the default.sty and where is the styles catalog and where is the DataEase program catalog? I don't see anything about styles in my application listed in the catalog area. The second part of my question was about the default location of the designer and object palette toolbars. Can anything be done about that? Mike Comment by: Michael M. Dorn at 5th September 2009 - 18:25 |

Hi Ulrik, I figured out how to change the default stylies in DataEase 7.1, but it does not work in DataEase 7.2. I highlight the text and click on update, but there are no choices to click in the drop down menu. I still do not know how to fix the default toolbars. Thanks, Mike Comment by: Michael M. Hi Ulrik, After I sent you the above message that I could not get the update style to work in Dataease 7.2, I figured out what I was doing wrong and got it to work. All I need to know now is, can the default location of the designer and object palette toolbars be changed? Thanks, Mike Comment by: Michael M. Dorn at 6th September 2009 - 18:56 |
GPF - Access ViolationI have received the same error message on a previously working document after upgrading to 7.1 from 7.0 (this is only one example). The solution was to "comment out" the portion in the DQL that called for "open document" and instead use "run procedure". This has worked every time. Interestingly, it is DIRECTLY OPPOSITE the solution given to me after having problems with the conversion from 4.53 to 7.0. All the "run Procedure" locations had to be modified to "open document". Also, I'm betting that this solution won't work for everything or at every occurrence. You must make the changes that work; based on the application and your memory situation. For your situation, why not set traps in your OML until you find the section causing the problem? Then edit until you have a solution. All the best. Delay in Printing - Version 4.2 Running on Windows XPI have "inherited" an old DataEase application, version 4.2, that I am attempting to install/run on Windows XP. I have no DataEase documentation or manuals. Everything seems to be working fine, except for printing of reports. The Printer Name is IBM Graphics. The printer being used is an Okidata. The printer properties in Windows is set to "Start Printing Immediately". When a 2-page report is sent to the printer, the first 12-15 lines print immediately. There is a several second delay before the remainder of the report is printed. It's almost as if a buffer needs to be filled or a time-out occur before the report finishes printing. Any suggestions?

Same error in 7.2 as in 7.1 and 7.0DataEase keeps locking out with and Exception : Access violationCan anyone help?! I've been using Dataease for 15 years now, and only in the newer versions have i been locked out of the system. It is very much random and can happen in DQL procedures, Form or Reports. It only happens when i'm constructing the database, never when actually processing and using\testing the working aspect of the database. It appears that randomly anytime the system is not comfortable with whatever it is i am doing it throws the following message : MESSAGE:- EXITING DUE TO EXCEPTION : Access Violation Instruction Pointer : 0x004361317 Stack Pointer : 0x0012F614 US Build : 7.2.657.0 Prism Build : 7.2.657.0 windowsxp. END It's driving me nuts, can anyone shed any light upon why the system maybe doing this. I've tried the system on many P.C.'s so it has nothing to do with the memory or hard drives etc. By: Joe Bennett posted: 3rd August 2009 - 12:48 Comment this |

Hi Joe! I guess what you refere to is GPF. There is two reasons for this, and no of them are really good. In this business we say that it is OK to fail and give an "stupid" error message, but giving up and bailing out is unforgivable. However this is exactly what DataEase do. In short this is "bad" memory management, which have haunted DataEase all through the Windows versions. The reason that only the Newer versions "bail" is that they are running on a newer platform that shut down the application when it point at memory outside its "allocated" area. When DataEase was first built, space and speed was of the essence. For speed one opted to use buffers instead of Dynamic Memory allocation, and for space one opted for "optimistc" buffers i.e. not bigger than they needed to be... This has been a decission that has haunted the product forever since, as applications has grown bigger, object names etc extended and one have moved on to 32 bit addressig etc, these buffers has invariably proven to small. We have cleaned up a lot of this is 7.2 and compared to 7.1 it is "almost perfect", but not so. We fix every occurence we find immediatly, but it is like fixing a old leaking radiator. 7.2 was never intended to be anything more than a good fix on 7.1, which was so bad that it completly stopped users in their tracks. A lot of reasons for this I would guess, but atleast it forced DataEase to make some serious decissions. We will keep plugging the holes in 7.2 but the real improvement will come with 7.3. In 7.3 we will completely replace the GUI and GPF will be a thing of the past. As you have discovered this is a problem for Design Time and not Run Time, which is atleast to some comfort. Using DE72 with ODBCI love the new look of DataEase, I am a user of DE since the eighties and this new one looks great. I am however having problems using an ODBC link that works perfectly fine with DE65. I connect to another DATABASE using ODBC and most of the tables connect fine but on some I get a"missing columns or table does not exist". I have my IT group looking into this problem but is it DE72 related? By: Luis Conde posted: 28th July 2009 - 19:34 Comment this |

Hi Luis! It is DataEase related as much as you said, this is a problem with 7.x and not with 6.5. It is on our list, and we will clean it up shortly. We have concentrated on the core functionality of DataEase, and not yet touched the ODBC or OLE functionality.
