Core conversion from DataEase for DOS to DE6

This is the fundamental process for a DataEase DOS (DFD) conversion to DataEase 6 (DE6), as this service converts the core elements of a DFD application into the DataEase 6 environment. Specifically, this means that all the elements of the original application with the exception of procedures and reports will be converted to DE6.

  • The core conversion has proven to be very efficient, especially for companies working within a fixed budget but with in-house resources to complete the second phase of conversion (building procedures and reports) on the basis of work done by the Sapphire specialists.
  • If needed, Sapphire can provide training tailored specifically to the needs of each Customer to help their personnel carry out the remainder of the conversion in the most efficient manner.
  • Flexibility is the key and subject to agreement the Core Conversion service can be extended to include conversion of the most complex or most frequently used procedures and reports. These procedures and reports can be later used by the Customer as the basis for converting the rest of the application procedures and reports.
  • The main advantage of this approach is that you get a low cost, reliable, 100% tested database already populated with data from your live DFD application and ready for data entry and browsing.
  • Hence, once Sapphire has delivered a ready to use basis for your application, your main task will be conversion of reports because all the work related to porting the database structure and Forms will have been completed by Sapphire.

Upon completion of the core conversion process Sapphire delivers:

  1. Procedures to export data from the original DFD application and a batch file containing instructions for automatic installation of these export procedures into the same original application. Export procedures are used to automatically export live data from the original DFD application and then import the data into a new DE6 application at the relevant time.
  2. A DE6 application functionally equivalent to its DFD counterpart. Specifically, this means that your DE application contains:
    • Tables and Fields checked and renamed in accordance with the requirements of DE6.
    • Relationships renamed in accordance with the requirements of DE6 given the fact that Tables and Fields used in Relationships might have been also renamed.
    • Forms (and SubForms) with all Fields created and with proper styles applied. By default, Sapphire does not design your application Forms. This means that all Fields on all Forms will be formatted (colour, font, size, etc.) but their layout will be on a field per line basis. Again, subject to prior agreement, Sapphire can custom design your application Forms. This means that you can choose whether you want to have Forms designed by Sapphire or undertake this task yourself. In any case, you will be offered to select a style sheet from the several pre-defined templates that Sapphire will use whilst building Forms and formatting Fields.
    • Derivation and validation formulae will be properly adjusted in accordance with the potentially changed names of Tables and Fields used in the relevant formulae.
    • Menus but with no actions setup for procedures (as procedures are outside the scope of this process).
    • Data import routines to import the data exported from the live DFD application into a new one in batch mode.
  3. Project and in-line documentation, namely:
    • An Excel spreadsheet containing the details of conversion, namely: lists of DFD and the correspondingDE6 elements subjected to conversion - tables, fields (field attributes inclusive), relationships and a list of recommended DE6- and db-compatible names for procedures that can be used by the Customer later.
    • An Excel spreadsheet containing the details of data export/import ( Summary Data Sheet).
