How do I upgrade my DataEase for Windows application to DataEase 7.x?
How do I upgrade my DataEase DOS application to DataEase 7.x?

How do I upgrade my DataEase for Windows application to DataEase 7.x?

Users of DFW 5.x should move to 6.52 and make sure that their applications work in that version. There are numerous minor differences between versions of DFW which can cause significant problems if applications are brought directly from old versions into DataEase 7.x. So the correct migration path will be upgrade to 6.52 first and then migrate to DE7. For 5.x users this entails a double-upgrade price, but DataEase Sales will have a reduced-cost upgrade path.

How do I upgrade my DataEase DOS application to DataEase 7.x?

DFD 2.x Users
Consult with the DataEase Conversion team. The process is not straight-forward.

DFD 4.x Users
Step 1 is to upgrade to DFD 5. Contact DataEase Sales for details. A reduced-cost upgrade to DFD 5 will be made available for the purpose of migration.
Step 2 follow the instructions for DFD 5.x users, listed below.

DFD 5.x users
Although not 100% essential, it is strongly recommended that DFD 5.xx users move their applications into DFD 5.53 before migrating to DataEase 7.x

The DataEase 7.x migration tool will perform a core migration (tables and data) from a DFD5 application. Other components - such as reports - will not be migrated.
Users wishing to move a complete application from DFD to DE7 are recommended to use the DataEase conversion service, although they can of course choose to rebuild the missing components themselves.

Important Notes to DOS Users

  • DataEase 7.x is not interoperable with older versions of DataEase. If you need to continue to share data with older DataEase systems (in either DFD or DFW 5/6) you can only do so in a limited way via OLE DB. Users of 'interoperability' will have to stay on DFW 6.52. For this reason DFW 6.52 and DFD5.53 will stay on sale beside DE7 for some time to come.
  • Once you have upgraded to DE7 there is no way back. The migration tool is a one-way process. (Of course, you can keep a copy of the old application prior to migrating, but this will quickly become outdated, once you start using the DE7 system).
  • The Migration Tool performs a limited migration from DOS. It will convert Tables with their data (including Users and Relationships) but it will not convert any DQLs, nor will it migrate Menus.
  • There is a way to move DQL reports from DFD into DFW - but the process (described later) is not part of the Migration Tool.
  • Menus are not migrated - but this is not a significant drawback. It's easy to reproduce DFD Menus in DFW, but it's better to redesign your Menu Structure in DFW, which can produce much more versatile Menus.
  • Printer definitions are not migrated, since DOS and Windows handle printer control quite differently. Procedures which contain printer control codes will need to be reworked.
