An Open product Open Closed Doors.
DG3 is not an open source product but it is an open product. So what is the difference?
DataEase has always been a "closed" product. The only way you could ever influence its behaviour was through CDFs and not many people ever ventured down that path.
You have always been able to use the features included in DataEase, and there has been a lot of creativity in pushing them as far as possible, but at the end of the day you have always been limited as to what you can accomplish. In DataEase for Windows you can at least make an application look almost like your own, while you in DFD you can do little more than changing the default colours. However you can always tell that a DataEase application is exactly that, because even in the Windows version we have our own distinctively DataEase controls, toolbars, "flashy" windows, etc. When we started on DG3 we wanted to make a tool that gave you the best from DataEase but made it a rule that we will create the functionality but not determine how you should use it. A brand new line of thought in DataEase starts ... The beauty of the Web, if you use it right, is that you can just send over a document with code for the browser to interpret it. So the only thing you need to do to allow people to do whatever they like is to allow them to get between the automated stuff and the browser, and that is exactly what we have done in DG3. We have made all our objects intentionally manipulative and then we reverse engineer them into our framework. We offer a simple way of getting to grips with the functionality, but if you think you can do it better, you can simply open the bonnet and start re-wiring DG3. It is open ended in all ends and it leaks like a sieve for your benefit. Just get in there and get your hands dirty, rip out our stuff and insert your own. Take our examples and turn them upside down. Use the good bits and throw away the bad bits. After all it is yours, you paid for it!
