DataEase 8 Exporting?

I am currently running DataEase 5.17 and 6.53 together and I have been reluctant to upgrade to DFW 7.x etc due to the fact that it is not interoperable with DFD.

To be honest we don't use the DFD part of the system much any more (the users don't even have access to it) but the reason we keep it around is that we use it for one thing...exporting.

I have asked this question many times before, and the problem is not exporting of DataEase in CSV etc, but exporting formatted text.

DFD is magic when it comes to building documents and my problem with DFW is that it do either too much or too little.

I don't need a print spool or a PDF, I build HTML that I export to my website. It is brilliantly simple. Every evening I run a DQL that create a HTML file containing our stock etc, and then I simply copy it to the website.

I haven't yet bought DataEase 8 but I am tempted on taking you up on the "weekend offer", but I already have 7.0, 7.1 and 7.2 in the drawer and I am running out of room?

Can 8 do what I want, or will I be stuck the same way again?

Re:DataEase 8 Exporting?

Hi Benny.

I have now spent my weekend playing with Dataease 8 and I think that I already can say that you can!

I talked to DataEase on the Live Chat and they tell me that DataEase 8 Reporter will be able to do all the same reporting/saving to disc stuff that DFD did and in very much the same way. It is a little funny that you want to do HTML as from what I understand that is basically what DataEase do now - either pure text like DFD or Tagged text i.e. HTML.

But as DataEase 8 reporter is still some months away, I think that what you will find interesting is the new Memo functions. I haven't had to much time to look at them myself, but from what I can see they can do all the stuff you want and much more.

The functions you want to take a look at it MemoWriteToFile() and WriteToFile(). These functions can write, insert and append text files and they accept file name as a parameter so you can create any dynamic file and place it wherever you like.

I don't think you need to copy the files to your webserver anymore, you can simply update the HTML files directly.

Re:DataEase 8 Exporting?

The answer is YES.

I am building an xml formatted export from database....to send payment files from payroll to bank.

Built also an html export to send out a priceless html file to web site.
