VDos

Is anyone running Dataease Dos under VDos in windows 7 and later? I have been able to run DataEase Dos in windows 10 under DosBox - but when I try to access an existing DataEase application, under VDos I have the following problem. I can get into DataEase and can see that it is in the correct directory - but when I try to open the data base, the sign on menu shows invalid data base names - i.e. "(D)". I have tried creating a small test data base, adding a few forms/records/queries - and it looks ok. I can see the data and run the forms. However, when I close/exit and try to go into the same data base I just created, all I can see is that there are invalid data base names as choices rather than the test data I had just created. Anyone have a suggestion?

Thank you very much.

Re:VDos

What version of DataEase are you running?

the (D) is normally a symptom on DataEase trying to open a Repository from a newer version than it is itself i.e. If it was older it would come up with the option of migration.

It sounds like the problem is that it doesn't create the Repository correctly.

Re:Re:VDos

Thanks for your quick response. I'm running with a really old version - 4.20!

Any suggestions?

Re:Re:Re:VDos

We don't have this version but can't see why it should be any different than other 4.x versions in this context.

The normal problem is related to memory management as DataEase for DOS use it sown DOS extender (16m).

To be honest I can't even remember if that had already appeared in 4.2.

Do you start it wit DEASE.EXE or DE16M.EXE?

It might be an idea to try with a slightly newer version of DataEase for DOS.

They kept updating the DOS Extender with each version so in general it is easier to get a newer version of DFD to work than an older.

Re:Re:Re:Re:VDos

I start it with DEASE.EXE. What I don't understand is that if it's a DataEase issue, why does it work with DosBox and not with VDos? Do you have VDos installed so that you can test out with my small sample data base - to see if it's an issue with my VDos installation?

I've heard that DoxBox is may be problematic and VDos is more stable for database applications. However, I've been running my DataEase DOS applications for many years in a simple single user environment under XP. I'm moving to Window 10 and am wondering if I can use DoxBox (which works with no changes) or do I need to figure out how to make it work under VDos? The applications are for a religious organization that is very short on funds so any new expense would be extremely difficult to justify.

Where would I be able to get a later version than 4.2 if needed?

Thanks again for your attention.

Re:Re:Re:Re:Re:VDos

We are talking seriously old software here and a lot of tricks etc. was employed to get things running better on "Inferior" hardware etc.

Are you running 1 or many users. The problem with DOSbox is simply that it will only run single user i.e. no networking.

As this is virtualisation it should/would be no difference from the inside if you run XP or Windows 10. As long as DOSBox will run your installation will work the same.

I know from our testing that to get DataEase to run in DOSBox was a "nightmare" too. Some versions would run and some wouldn't. Then you had to tweak memory settings and processor emulation etc, and then you could get it to run - maybe etc.

It turns out I was "lying". We did have 4.2 in our archive and you are correct. It doesn't work with vDos.

As you are basically running 100% in low dos memory there isn't any tweaks to employ either by the look of it.
