migrate facility no longer exists :o

Want to test a 6.52 app in Dataease 8 but it's not possible. I can't just open the app in 8 like I can a 7.2 app so I need to migrate the app from 6.52 to 8. Problerm being the MIGRATE function is no longer with us. In the datease 8 menu I have Migration Tool but it links to a none existant file, i.e it doesn't exist in 8. What gives??

Tried to search this website for any info but the search field top right is just for decoration and doesn't do anything/doesn't work (firefox 25.0.1), it's like the migrate facility lol.

Re:migrate facility no longer exists. YES IT DOES ;-)

Hi Simon.

This is DataEase and we have a proud tradition in "obfuscation" ;-)

Sorry, couldn't help myself. There is a lot of room for improvement across the board, but I think the good symptom is that we are prepared to admit it and that we are actively working on it.

There is/has been a big change in DataEase (both product and organisation) over the last years, but it is not apparent everywhere yet. It is a big job, and it will simply take us some time to cover all of it. Please bear with us!

1. Migration tool.
Migration tool was removed from 8.0 simply because migration from 6.x to 7.x was a disaster and stopped a majority of DFW 5.x and 6.x users from ever migrating to 7.x. When we realised this and that 6.x didn't work in Windows 7 we devised a two tear plan: 1) LegEasy 6 Windows, make sure 5.x and 6.x user can keep their applications alive in Windows 7. 2) Scheduled a proper migration tool to 8.1 of DFW.

LegEasy 6 Windows was a great success and was our best selling product last year! A little depressing of course, but a proof that the strategy of listing and fulfilling our customers needs works.

DataEase 8 has also gotten a fantastic reception by the users and even though most users haven't even scratched the surface of the functionality yet it looks to be a great version of DataEase. We didn't rest on the laurels, but immediately started on 8.1 where the focus is migration from DFW 5.x-6.x.

DataEase 8.1 is ready but not released yet, however there is a beta available which will migrate a 6.5 app as it should be migrated.

You find a description/download here.

2. Search.
As you know, our website is DataEase and traditional DataEase technology has some limitations when it comes to searching...

The search field in the menu has up to now been used for local search...i.e. searching in the page you are on (like blog, forum, news etc).

It is not a good way of doing it, but as there has never been a way of searching an entire DataEase database we didn't have much choice.

However.... this has now been amended but not implemented on our website yet (which is embarrassing, but please read it into the same time constraint).

In DG3 we now have a new indexing engine that will allow you to generate a freetext index to search an entire DataEase (or parts) database.

Great little news we have even forgotten to share with the world....

Re:Re:migrate facility no longer exists. YES IT DOES

I suspected it might have something to do with 8.1, hence why i tried to search lol. Search doesn't even search the home page. The words DG3 appear lots, I just typed DG3 pressed enter and it sat there , so clicked on the search button and it still sat there. The search physically does nothing , it doesn't even attempt to send the request to the page/nothing attempts to load. Not tried IE.

Off to download beta 8.1 to see what it does to my 6.52 apps! :)
