De8 and Crystal Reports / Other ?

Has anyone used dataease or any other database for that matter to create raw data for use in another program that create reports?  I've heard of Crystal Reports but no idea what it's like or how it works so wondering if anoyone has any experience here or know of another / a better program to creat reports from supplied data?

I'm looking to use De8 to update my v7.x purchasing database as i don't print much from it and it gives me a chance to start looking properly at De8..

Thinking ahead, once i have it i can then play with upgrading my v6.52 contracts database, that i couldn't upgrade to 7.x due to show stopping export bug that ADDED a character (space) in FIXED length exports.

But as De8 has no report printout facility (other than the phased out DQL/QBM) and I do a lot of reports in this database, I'm wondering if anyone has used an external program to create reports (like Crystal Reports?) and use dataease to feed it the data?  This way i can move the 6.52 database forwards, have the abilty to create new reports without knowing i'll have to do them all over again becasue I've had to do them in QBM/DQL that dataease have dropped.  Also means i can start using De8 and it's new features now, and not in a few years time when De8 comes out of Alpha and the reporting module is written/released.

A bonus of this is I wont have to suffer the 1st release Vista fever; i.e when the new reports add on gets released i wont have to suffer the inevitable bugs that plague any first time software release.

Another indirect bonus of this is the abilty to change direction and use another database without having to recreate all my reports, just have to write the code to create the data.file.

It's a win win situation.

- I get to upgrade dataease; all be it an alpha release, the ExecDQL alone is worth it and is screaming to be used.

- I would be able to create new reports NOW and not in a few years time, this is live data and I need to be able to write new reports as they are needed.

- I skip the future Vista stage of De reports

- It brings flexability for the future as reports are created in a seperate program.

Any thoughts/experience?
