Forum can't, handle double digit replies

As the forum is based around DG3 it seems right to be under DG3 as this is a visible bug that can't be explained away.

When you reach about 12 replies in a thread the replies no longer appear at the end, i.e. continuing the conversation, but appear in somewhere near the top of the thread out of sequence.  2 good examples are

'Reporter' started by Rainer; the 2nd line of the thread is from me, dated 09.09.14, in reply to line 17 dated 08.09.14 from Adrian Jones ("Hi Simon,It's understandable ...") !

The other being the 'setcolor() only works intermitently' thread.  The last apparent post is 24.09.14 from me, titled 'Re:2 2=4'.  The REPLY to that on the same day is the 2nd line down on the thread from Datease Tech, titled Re:Re:2 2=4'.

Re:Forum can't, handle double digit replies

Sometimes this feel like a contest where we are the bad guys and the purpose is to catch us lying.

There is a lot of weaknesses in the forum but it is mainly due to it being created in a matter of hours 2 years ago and never improved since.

The bug you are pointing out is not a bug in DG3 but a bug in the design of the forum. We tried to sort the replies according to which section you replied to i.e. if you replied to the first message the replied was sorted under it instead of at the end of the thread. This wasn't a good idea, so we will change it when we have the time to do so.

Nobody in this organisation ever try to explain a bug away or pretend that things that is wrong is "as designed", the problem is much more that we have limited time and resources and try to do a lot with what we have and there is not enough to go around.

We would appreciate it if the tone would be a little less confrontational and the assumption would be that we try to help.

It is a watershed moment for users (and us) when they start assuming that when something goes wrong it is something they did wrong, rather than the product being wrong.

Technically this moment have long past, but it seems that we have a problem convincing some old users.

Re:Re:Forum can't, handle double digit replies

I questioned if it was sorted according to which section i replied to like you said before even posting this, but it wasn't, hence why it is a bug.  Your  reply to 'Re:2 2=4' at the END of the thread is 'Re:Re:2 2=4', but appears 2nd line down, and in the middle of 'setcolor() only works intermitently' and 'Re:setcolor() only works intermitently'  I even made a point of showing the title in my report so as to point out that it was a reply to THAT comment and not an eearlier once whioch may make it appears elsewhere depending on how the De Forum had been designed.

I was sure going back to the start we were told this was forum was created using DG3 so I'll rephrase, it's not a bug in DG3 it's a bug in DataEase as per the heading 'DATAEASE FORUM ... Made 100% in DataEase ...'

I have to assume it's dataease at fault all the time as with no instructions and no structured rules or guides for using the new stuff i'm playingt blind and taking what the support staff tell me as gospel.

has just meant i have no idea how to use setstyle as for text fields i was shown getvalue, but that didn't work for choice fields and i was told

'Using GetValue() for this was more a "curios" rather than how you should do it' so I shouldn't be using getvalue in which case why show me.  I had tried before not using getvalue as that seemed overkill, in various ways to no avail so did it exactly as the example given which worked, for text fields,

I WANT to learn, but without any documentation for all these conceptually completely new functions how else am i supposed to except by asking here.  I looked at the demo using buttons, i figured out how it worked, changed it to do the purpose of changing field colours and can't get it to work the same going forwards through records as it does going backwards, the result is true one way and false the other.  I'm also not sure what a 'column' is in reference to the database, to which is referred to a few times in help to me, I'm used to fields, forms, records, tables.

I'm clearly annoying people with all my questons, i'm just trying to learn without an instruction manual or theory manual.  Think it best I wait for DataEase to be finished as i'm probably not the kind of person you want on a beta product. Sorry.

Re:Re:Re:Forum can't, handle double digit replies

Hi Simon.

Answers on here will always be a little more generally directed when we do it than the person asking the question wants as we are building a knowledge base as well as answering a question directly.

I am sorry that I used your reply to "make a point" about the tone on the forum. I can see from your contribution that you are enthusiastic about DataEase so of course we want you as a "tester" and contributor. My "point" was simply that your formulations can some times be a little confrontational and that rubs people up the wrong way (intentional or not).

We might some times be a little more prickly than we ought to be as we get a lot of stick for things that is our of our control. It is no secret that the truth was not always forthcoming in DataEase/Sapphire which has caused a lot of frustration with users.

We are well aware that DataEase in all ways is not up to the standard we want and users can reasonably expect, but we choose to publish the improvements as we go along with very basic documentation as the complete documentation will only be possible when the product(s) come fully together.

We try to help out when people are stuck trying to use the new stuff (and the old stuff) but our focus need to be on finishing this product first, then document and make it market ready and then market it.

DataEase 8 is not a Beta product, it is basically a continues iteration on a product that has been for sale for more than 20 years. If it was a new product (like DG3) we wouldn't have chosen to release it before it was finished but as it is continual improvements on a product that has been on sale for so long the only natural thing is to allow users to take advantage of any new iteration as soon as it is ready.

I think we all need to agree that we are at least generally headed in the right direction but we are learning and willing to learn from our mistakes and we will freely admit when we are wrong, the only thing we ask for in return is good spirits and that requests and questions is addressed in a nice tone to us and to fellow users.

Re:Re:Re:Re:Forum can't, handle double digit replies

Me confrontational? never :D .... ok I hold my hands up to that lol, I am.  I know I am! and for that I apologise.

A lot of it is my own frustration, I'm used to learning things myself, looking things up and working through them.  Without documentation to read and nothing elsewhere I'm reliant on others.

I saw dataease as a beta as any product without instructions in my mind is incomplete, but that's just my stubboness, another of my annoying flaws :D

I'm going to leave setstyle alone now as i'm getting nito knots trying to figure out how to lay it out and where quotes should appear and where/if getvalue is needed.  Think i'll try setcolor again, and then leave it alone for a few months.

Thank you for your feedback, and help, even if it doesn't always appear appreciated!

Re:Re:Re:Re:Re:Forum can't, handle double digit replies

Good Morning Simon.

Don't say that we never listen... ;-)

We have now updated the forum so the latest reply always appear at the end of the list. Your observation of the double digit replies was very astute by the way. We "tried" to create a sort key based on combination of Post ID, Reply ID, Date and time... It worked fine up to 9 then at 10 everything shifted on space and it became a mess as you observed.

It took a while for this problem to appear as the forum had to grow in popularity first ;-)

It could have easily be remedied but the idea was a stupid one in the first place. Humans work according to conventions and we expect the latest reply to appear at the bottom (or top) not in the middle so we simply fixed it "your way".

We have also added a Drop Box for attachments to Forum Posts. Here you can drop a sample application or any other attachment you want to add to your post.

If it is PRIVATE i.e. for our eyes only, you can simply choose NO in the "Do you want this file to be available for all users?" dropbox.

Again thanks for your contribution and you can tell that it actually works even if you get told off..... ;-)

All the best,

Ulrik
