What is the replacement command for DFD Lookup

I worked/developed applications in DFD in the late '80s - early '90s. I was actually one of your certified partners in the U.S. Now I am looking to upgrade to DE8.5. I have searched the BLOGs and Forums for help with the old LOOKUP command. Seems as though it has been dropped in this version. My application is simple: When I enter a unique customer number in NEW JOB FILE, I just want it to go to the CUST FILE and automatically populate the Cust Name field with the proper customer. Right now, all I can get is a drop down box with all of my customers names in the related customer file. Can you send an example of how I can do this in the new version? I also used the Sub-Form in DFD quite a bit. I am still trying to figure out how to view related records in a sub-form on my data-entry screen. May need to ask for help on that later. Thanks, Lisa

Re:What is the replacement command for DFD Lookup

Dear Lisa.

Now you take me back.

I came back to DataEase myself after a long “holiday” in 2007 and my first “challenge” was exactly the same as yours…

What has happened to Lookup!!!!

It was idiotic to call the DropDown field for LookupField… Very un-spired and unoriginal and definitely done by someone that didn’t know the history of DataEase…

Lookup is there and it works the same way as always, but it is not a command and not a function but an operator it seems… ;-)

So you find it in the operators list, but far down.

Where you also find an a lot of other useful “operators”.

Thanks for the info. I found the operator but cannot get it to return any value. Could it be a limitation in the beta (sample) version I am using. I haven't purchase the complete software yet. Trying to decide if I can do the Lookup function and Sub-Form function like DFD. Each time I modify the field to be DERIVIED, Choose the related form name, CUSTOMER FILE and the Column, CUSTOMER NAME, then choose the operation LOOKUP, press OK. Go back to my form NEW JOB. Enter CUST # (which is the unique related field between both forms), it doesn't fill in the CUSTOMER NAME. Go back to the field definition and it has reverted back to a text field. Doesn't seem to be saving modifications. Is this a limitation of the trial version?

Re:Re:Re:form open related layout more than 1 to view = no fire Setanything() on return data to

Hi again Lisa.

No, it is not the Beta. The Beta status is just “pro-forma” due to big changes in the Database logic but not related to this.

The problem is that you are fooled by this “lookup field” malarkey.

Forget about that, that is a “misuse” of the Lookup name. The “Lookup field” is a dropdown field based on a relationship.

All types of fields can have a derivation with Lookup in it.

lookup myrelationship myfield

You can use it to lookup a text, data, price..whatever.

It is exactly the same as in DFD.

If the relationship is matched the lookup will return the first matching value from the relationship.

if the field is not write protected it will not lookup the value until you have touched it (i.e. tabbed through it) or when you save the record.

if it is write protected or virtual it will lookup immediately when the relationship is satisfied or changed.

See the attached sample to get a better understanding.

Thanks for the help. The zip file was exactly what I needed. Any chance I can get a sample Sub-Form file? We enter into sub-forms to generate billing statements and payroll. An example from you would be very helpful. Next step is to purchase the software. Can I do that online?

So glad you guys are back.

Simple Subform App.

Download Sample App

Hi Lisa.

Thanks for that.

Please find attached your original sample but with and added button on the SimpleLookup form to go to SimpleOrder

You can purchase the software online, just go to the shop.

It will be instant delivery when the order is checked-out.
RE: So glad you guys are back.

DataEase has in-fact been around all the time since its “birth” in the early 80ies but a new company/team came in first in 7.2 when we took over the development of DataEase from Sapphire/DataEase International LTD gradually until 2011 when all DataEase development was done by us. In July 2012 we bought out the Sapphire/DIL and became sole publisher of DataEase.

The investment, development and commitment to DataEase has never been greater, and we hope and believe that the rapid progress of DE8 bode well for the future ;-)
