Application Utilities Install

Good Afternoon Dataease

Using DATAEASE 8.5.0.2222,D85-PICKERIN000-28809 with Share local database switched off and strategy = single user.

Trying to install single documents from a LegEasy 6.53 Database into Dataese 8.5 using the Application Utilities Install option.

When you go to search for the documents (FRM) in a 6.53 folder none are shown, although the TDF files are. You can also see the DBM files using the Import Data option.

I know this option worked in December when we purchased a month’s trial of Dataease 8.0 T80-M01PICKE7HB-39090

Not sure what we are doing wrong, any help would be appreciated.

Many Thanks.

Re:Application Utilities Install

Hi Kev.

A lot of things has changed since then...

1. You don't have to run single user etc. to install documents any more. You can run in Normal mode. Switching the locking strategy in the "outer" DataEase will not change the locking strategy for the application, it will simply change the default setting for new application made without template.

In 8.5 Opportunistic is the only locking strategy (there is ways to select the other, but they will be removed in 9. so we have "blanked" them).

We have run Opportunistic in all major developments since 8.0 and we are now firmly convinced that it is the only locking option for File based databases in 2015.

2. 6.x and 8.x is not compatible so it was more like a bug that you could install documents from 6.x to 8.x in 8.0. This "opportunity" was removed when we fixed the install function.

If you want to install documents from a 6.x application into 8.x, migrate the application first (copy) and then install from the migrated copy.

Re:Re:Application Utilities Install

Many thanks for your prompt reply.

The reason I was going down this path with single document install was I could not migrate my application – see my recent post 17/5/16 MIGRATION ERROR 6.53 to 8.5.0.2222.

Hope you can help.

Re:Re:Application Utilities Install

Hi again Kev.

Upload your application on here as a hidden upload and we will have a look.

There is so much "history" in old DataEase applications so sometimes you get caught out....

DataEase has been a strong beliver in Migrations which means changing one functionality to something more or less similar.

Since 8.x we have moved away from this belief. Now we either expand or add functionality while maintaining old functionality as is. This way there is a chance that things will work as one progress.

Sadly moving from 6.x to 8.x means that 7.x looms in the background so it is not as straight forward as it should have been.

Re:Re:Re:Application Utilities Install

Hi again Kev.

We have now looked at your application and we understand why you have struggled.

There is something peculiar/corrupt in this application.

Where dos it originate i.e. is it in-house development all the way or did it start off with an application supplied to you from a third party.

Did this application start its life in DFW 6.x or does it originate from DFD etc.

There is some indications that parts of this application has been encrypted which will be a problem when you try to migrate/backup it.

As you see from the picture the problem is already there in 6.x when you try to backup/restore the application.

We have spent an hour trying to figure this out and as it is application related we can't spend any more.

We can have our support department look at it, but that is chargeable but I understand that PB Associates has offered you an helping hand to so you might prefer to talk to them.

We or them will be able to fix this but it is not as simple as any one of us had hoped.

Let us know what you want to do and sorry for the inconvenience.
