DataEase 6.5-- to 8.5, migrates but it's much slower

We want to move to 8.5, but every time we download a trial version and run it with our existing data we have something that is slow slow slow.  Reports that give results immediately with the old software, take minutes to complete in 8.5 and don't seem to actually finish.  They give a page or two of data, then we have to tab or enter to get more, and then we wait again.  This is opposite to what we'd expect with newer software that is better matched to our current operating system.  I have searched this forum, and the only threads commenting on slowness give answers relating to locking settings.  We have implemented those suggestions, with no improvement.  We must be missing something very significant but I and our systems guy have run out of ideas.  This is probably a question for the developer and not the user community but I'm open to suggestions from everyone.  DataEase has worked so well for us, for 15 years, that we want to continue with it and to upgrade our license but we can't manage with something that is so incredibly slow.  What should be our next step?

Re:DataEase 6.5-- to 8.5, migrates but it's much slower

Hello there,

I have already made the change some time ago. I could not, however, notice this problem. Rather, on the contrary, many functions are much faster than before! Maybe one would have to check the existing scripts if small traps are hidden there. I think the change is definitely a good decision. As I said, I have no performance problems. However, we have now also developed some scripts completely new. Thus, we also use the many new functions.

All the best
Markus

Hi

Have done similar migrations, and performance was never an issue.  On the contrary is gets a lot better......

I would try Remove the indexes on each form, save form, re-open again and rebuilt indexes.

You said this has been built 15 years ago.  This means that when you migrate you are using the latest technology with development methods and functions which were available 15 years ago.  It may be a good idea to change your procedures to the new technology and functionality available.

kind regards

Josef

I sure wish we did not have the problem, but we do.  I hope someone has a lead for us to follow, to fix it.  It's not just one report, but everything we have tested.

Re:Re:DataEase 6.5-- to 8.5, migrates but it's much slower

The problem is that between 6.x and 8.0 there is a version called 7 which have a lot of behaviour changes which made it close to impossible for DFW 6.x users to migrate to 7.x without a lot of work.

We have done a lot in 8.x do improve the migrate experience but there is limits to how far we can go as we also need to be compatible with 7.x.

As stated from other users overall 8.x and particularly 8.5 mostly runs circles around all previous versions of DataEase but the Achilles heel is migration from pre 7.x versions of DataEase and then particularly 6.x

Strangely enough you can migrate DFW 5.x applications that won't even start in 6.x directly to 8.5 and they run "perfectly" while there is sometimes sever problems with DFW 6.x application.

It is nothing that can't be rectified and after it has been fixed your application will run much better in 8.5 than it ever did in 6.x but it will take someone in the know to look at the specific problems and fix them.

We are sorry for the inconvenience.
