Simplicty and flexibility!

New chefs, a new menu.....

If you do the same thing for long enough you begin to think that this is how things are done, how they SHOULD be done! The reason animals get old and die is to allow new generations to take over and move the species forward. However this does not mean that the younger generation does not have a responsibility to look after their elders. OK! That is drawing the parallel far enough, but it has relevance in DataEase too.

The entire computer industry along with ourselves have been guilty at some point of pushing people to upgrade. Scare tactics, marketing stunts, sales pitches... anything to get people to upgrade to the latest product. We never stopped to ask if this was the best way forward for you, the customer. Everyone who has been with DataEase for a long time will fear beyond anything else the word 'migration'! Let's not spend much time on the word itself or the grief we have all shared over it, let's just agree that it doesn't work. It is a noble idea, but like so many other noble ideas, they only work in a perfect world and as such are completely unworkable and outright flawed in the real world. So here we make a promise that we will never break: No more migrations! But we need to move forward so what will we do instead? Co-operation. DG3 will bridge and support DataEase formats from DFD 5.x via DFW 6.x to DFW 7.x. You will not have to migrate anything to share your existing data with DG3. You can simply use the applications you have invested in over the last 30 years as they are, while at the same time being able to develop a new web frontend, a portal, or any other new module in DG3. DataEase used to be evolutionary and we are fully embracing and promoting this approach. Don't develop your new solution as a project, make it part of your everyday software reality. Enhance your solution when you want and need to, not when you have time or can afford to. But we go a step further or rather possibly two... We have already developed a new version of DFW 6, called LegEasy Windows 6 with sub title 6.53, and we are currently evaluating the possibility of developing a new version of DataEase for DOS called LegEasy DOS 6. The last is a slightly misleading name as it is a full Windows 64x application but 'Character Based DataEase for Windows' sounded so lame. We are also currently working at full speed on the next version of DataEase for Windows, namely 7.5(3?). Whilst the focus in the legacy version is to retain compatibility and to run existing DFD and DFW 6x applications in Windows 7x and 8x, the focus in 7.5 is to implement new functionality and improve co-existence with DG3. So the message to all of you who were beginning to lose faith in the future of DataEase is: we have never before published more than one new version of DataEase in one year but over the next year we will publish not only a completely new version of DataEase, DG3, but also a contemporary version of the first generation, as well as 2 new versions for the second generation. Don't ever again say that we don't look after our customers!
